“Stone Cold” Steve Austin gained popularity in the late ‘90s as being one of the most disrespectful characters that WWE ever had. His “antihero” persona disregarded everyone including the boss of WWE, Vince McMahon.

McMahon on the other hand has declared that, despite Austin’s defiance, he’s the most profitable wrestler that his organization has ever had. Former WWE executive Jim Ross said that:” Nobody touches Austin… No-one generated more cash in the length of their WWE career”.

Austin became linked to the beginning of the Attitude Era, where wrestling focused on more adult-oriented language and violence. Despite his mockery and “antihero” character, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin held 21 championship titles throughout his career as a wrestler. He conquered the title of WWF Champion (now WWE World Heavyweight Championship) for six times (March 1998, June 1998, March 1999, June 1999, April 2001 and October 2001).

Austin was the fifth wrestler to win the distinction of Triple Crown Champion. Austin also took the title of King of the Ring in 1996 and won the Royal Rumble of 1997, 1998 and 2001.

WWE Hall of Fame and permanent injuries

Forced to leave the ring behind, in 2003, due to injuries to his knees and neck, Austin didn’t leave wrestling forever. For the rest of 2003 and in 2004, Austin was present on Raw as the Co-General Manager. Since 2005, Austin made several appearances, but nothing similar to what his fans wanted. However, Austin was inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 by the one he fought with over his years as a wrestler and also the man that gave him the most recognition, the chairman and CEO of WWE, Vince McMahon.
