It was created when Vincent van Gogh was in an asylum just a <strong>year before he died at 1890<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The painting was created before the first of his attacks at the asylum. This particular picture was what he called \u201c<em>the lightning conductor for my illness<\/em>\u201d because it was what <strong>kept him from going insane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are no drawings created to guide Vincent van Gogh in creating \u201cIrises\u201d. <strong>His brother submitted the painting<\/strong> to the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Artistes Ind\u00e9pendants in September 1889 with \u201cStarry Night Over the Rhone.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"quote_shortcode\" class=\"sixtop-post-quote post-quote-right\" >\n<div class=\"quote-sign-box hidden-on-desktop\"><\/div>\n<p>        &ldquo; A beautiful study full of air and life &rdquo;<\/p>\n<div id=\"quote_shortcode_after\">\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His brother described the painting \u201c<em>a beautiful study full of air and life<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0The first person to own the painting was an art critic and anarchist who was one of Van Gogh\u2019s first supporters \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octave_Mirbeau\" target=\"_blank\">Octave Mirbeau<\/a>. <strong>He bought the painting for 300 francs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987, it set the record for the most expensive painting ever sold, a record that lasted for 2 and half years. It was sold to Alan Bond for <strong>US$53,900,000<\/strong>, but Bond apparently did not have the money to pay for it.<\/p>\n<p>The painting was then re-sold to J. Roulin worked as a mail employee in Arles, France, a 15-hour train ride from Paris. <strong>Van Gogh moved to Arles in 1988<\/strong> to create artists cooperative.<\/p>\n<p>The plan never happened, and he felt isolated and lonely. However, he found comfort in the presence of the Roulin family, whom <strong>he made subjects in his many paintings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cPortrait of Joseph Roulin\u201d, Roulin is shown in his uniform that he proudly wore. When rumors of war were spreading, <strong>Rosenberg started to distribute his art collection<\/strong> amassing to more than 2,000 paintings. He used the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1939_New_York_World%27s_Fair\" target=\"_blank\">1939 New York World\u2019s Fair<\/a> as an excuse to ship Picasso\u2019s painting out of France.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg reached New York after the 1940 Nazi invasion of France and <strong>created his new art gallery<\/strong> located at East 57th Street. There, he put the painting back on display.<\/p>\n<p>The Brodys bought the painting in 1951. It was then <strong>publicly exhibited in 1961<\/strong> to pay tribute to Picasso\u2019s 80th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>When the owner died in November 2009, the painting was open again for auction. It was eventually sold on May 4, 2010. The painting was <strong>expected to profit $80 million<\/strong>. Eight bidders were at the auction house, but the painting was won by a bid taken through the telephone for $95 million. It is an encaustic painting \u2013 made of encaustic, newsprint collage, oil paint on separate canvases.<\/p>\n<p>Each canvas <strong>shows the three colors of the US flag<\/strong> with the 48 white stars as it was depicted in 1912 to 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii were not yet included as states.<\/p>\n<p>Newsprints are visible under the flag\u2019s stripes and it was clearly not selected randomly. The texts used were all for advertisements. He does this to free himself from having to create something new. What he wants to focus on is his creative execution of something familiar. He made <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jasper_Johns#Painting\" target=\"_blank\">over 40 paintings<\/a> based on the US flag alone.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2014, the flag was auctioned for <strong>$36,000,000<\/strong> in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the Museum of Modern Art, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfred_H._Barr,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Alfred Bar<\/a>, wanted to buy the artwork. However, he was concerned that it may be unpatriotic. After years of being passed, its authorship became unclear until Cook\u2019s descendants \u2013 without a clue \u2013 sold the painting for <strong>\u00a345 in 1958<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Simon is a specialist in Old Masters who acquired the painting in 2005. He had <strong>the painting restored and authenticated<\/strong>.
