It&#8217;s the tale of bi-racial dancers who grow up together in a poor London district but diverge in adulthood in the 1990s. Where one follows her dream of turning professional, the other becomes a personal assistant of a pop star.<\/p>\n<div class=\"special-link\">\n<div class=\"special-link-box\"><\/div>\n<p><em>If you want to know more about the author, here is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zadie_Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Wikipedia article<\/a> about her life and work.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201eIt&#8217;s a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early 20s, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either\u201d, says publisher Hamish Hamilton, which describes the novel as \u201edazzlingly energetic and deeply human\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Performing a reading of two chapters of the book at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Smith said the idea of conspiracy \u2013 which she sees as \u201ea symbol of a yearning for knowledge\u201d in the absence of a formal educational structure \u2013 is an underlying theme throughout the novel. Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, Matthew Desmond<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-105991\" src=\"http:\/\/6toplists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/matthew-desmond.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/6toplists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/matthew-desmond.jpg 364w, https:\/\/6toplists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/matthew-desmond-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/6toplists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/matthew-desmond-161x250.jpg 161w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"formatted-entry-p\">I<\/p>\n<p>n this heartbreaking account of the failed American dream, Harvard University sociologist Matthew Desmond moves to the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to chronicle eight families who have been evicted from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>One of those is Arleen, a single mother with two sons who somehow survives on just $20 a month that she has left over after paying rent \u2013 and is evicted days before Christmas. \u201eThere used to be a moratorium on eviction at Christmas in America\u201d, says The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eThey did away with that in 1991. A landlord convinced the Civil Liberties Union that the practice was unfair because it privileged a religious celebration over profit.\u201d\u00a0The New York Times says the burden of this \u201eastonishing\u201d book is to show how the world these people inhabit is \u201eindeed hell, or as close an approximation as you are likely to find in 21st-century America\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"special-link\">\n<div class=\"special-link-box\"><\/div>\n<p><em>You can read the full New York Times article about his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/28\/books\/review\/matthew-desmonds-evicted-poverty-and-profit-in-the-american-city.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The newspaper says Desmond is far more than a university professor, describing him as a journalist who has set a new standard in reporting on poverty. Ross, a billionaire businessman, is a significant investor in a secretive, remote compound \u201ewhere death is controlled and bodies are preserved until medical advances can restore individuals to improve\u00a0lives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a teaser excerpt, DeLillo writes: \u201eWe are born without choosing to be. Should we have to die in the same manner? Isn&#8217;t it a human glory to refuse to accept a certain fate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US author is best known for his novels Underworld and White Noise, but has tackled a wide variety of subjects in more recent works, including the September 11 terrorist attacks, science fiction, and football.<\/p>\n<div class=\"special-link\">\n<div class=\"special-link-box\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Interested in the other books of Don DeLillo?
