For many the year of birth of the soul genre is 1959, when the Atlantic Records label released the single disc “I’ve Got a Woman” played by Ray Charles – a rising star back then. Mixing the blues with gospel in an inconceivable  style, introduceducing sexual and spiritual connotations, tough and also tender, this new music trend shocked the world. It was a process of catalysis in a period of great effervescence in the American musical culture.

Origins

Soul music is a musical genre originating in the United States, combining elements of gospel music,rhythm and blues. Among the artists who have frequently approached this style we can name Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Ray Charles, Faith Evans, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Michael and Janet Jackson, Ben E. King, Beyoncé Knowles, Lenny Kravitz, Patti LaBelle, Leona Lewis, Prince, Minnie Riperton, Lionel Ritchie, Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Mary Wells.

Soul Music is music that was specific to the color singers, although there are some exceptions like Chris Clarke, Duffy, Amy Winehouse or Dusty Springfield.
