“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.” ― J.D. Salinger

What is the best book in the world or the best writer? To these questions there may be thousands of responses, and many are those who have tried all sorts of ways, more or less scientific, to designate a winner: according to the number of copies sold, the impact that had a particular book, the number of awards received, the number of characters or even number of pages.

J. Peder Zane, a former employee of the New York Times, currently a professor of journalism, had another idea: to make a top of the best of the best books and writers, based on a score awarded 125 authors contemporary such as Stephen King, Norman Mailer, Jonathan Franzen, Annie Proulx, Claire Messud, Margaret Drabble, Michael Chabon or Peter Carey.

544 books were mentioned, and the number of points received from each writer was constitution and charts: the best novel of the twentieth century, the best novel of the nineteenth century, the best authors in the number of Selected works, the best authors in the number of points and still there was a vast collection of top books and authors.

That being said, if you want a good reading and you are busy or lazy amazon.com’s most popular authors section is a great way to start or here are my favorite books from the section, books that reach to every type of reader or personality. Enjoy!
